What is a DOT physical?

A DOT physical is a comprehensive physical examination and a requirement for operating a commercial vehicle. Passing a DOT physical means you’re healthy enough to safely drive your vehicle and complete other required job duties. A certified medical professional must complete the exam to meet DOT physical standards.

What should I bring to a DOT physical?

When you arrive for your DOT physical at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine, make sure to bring with you the following:

·         Valid driver’s license or other photo identification

·         List of your current medications

·         Contacts or glasses if you wear them

·         Hearing aid if you have one

·         Medical release letter for certain health conditions

Medical staff at the practice provide required DOT medical examination forms, so you don’t have to worry about bringing forms with you.

What happens during DOT physicals?

When you arrive at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine for a DOT physical exam, your primary care specialist completes:

Medical history review/vital signs check

During the first part of a DOT physical, your provider checks your body weight, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs. They review your physical and mental health history by asking questions about symptoms, injuries, medications, and past diagnoses or surgeries.

Physical exam and diagnostic testing

During a physical exam your provider evaluates your breathing, heartbeat, vision, hearing, and overall health. You complete a drug and alcohol test using eScreen technology for instant urine drug test results. Your DOT specialist might recommend pulmonary function tests, electrocardiogram (EKG), or digital X-rays if necessary.

If you show signs of a medical problem, your provider might recommend additional diagnostic testing or treatment from a specialist.

DOT paperwork

After you pass a DOT physical, your primary care specialist fills out the medical examiner's report required to obtain an updated DOT medical card.

How often do I need a DOT physical?

Unless you have a medical condition that requires more frequent medical evaluations, schedule a DOT physical every 24 months. Your provider lets you know how often to schedule exams based on your medical history and overall health.

The next time you’re due for a DOT physical, you can trust the DOT-certified experts at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine with your care. They offer same-day appointments for added convenience.
