Drug Testing

What is drug testing?

Drug testing uses a sample of your blood, urine, saliva, or hair to find out if you’ve used drugs recently. A drug test can help your employer, coach, or a health care provider find out if you have drugs in your system that might affect your performance or your treatment in some way. Most commonly, drug tests look for:

·         Marijuana

·         Cocaine

·         Opioids (heroin, prescription painkillers)

·         Steroids

·         Amphetamines

·         Barbiturates

You should let the team at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine know if you take any drugs or supplements that could affect the results of your drug test. You should also avoid certain foods before the test, like poppy seeds, that could result in a false positive.

How does drug testing work?

When you come to L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine for a drug test, all you’ll need to do is provide the sample. In some cases, a member of the team is present for this. If your drug test requires a urine sample, you’ll urinate into a container and give it to your provider.  Your employer may require a hair sample. If you need a blood test, a member of the team draws a blood sample from a vein in your arm.

At L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine, a breath alcohol technician (BAT) also provides breath alcohol testing. For this test, you’ll blow into a device that reads the amount of alcohol on your breath. It estimates the percentage of alcohol in your blood, called your blood alcohol content (BAC). This test provides instant results to show whether you are currently intoxicated.

We utilize eScreen technology for instant urine drug testing results.

When do I need drug testing?

There are several reasons why you might need drug testing. Many organizations require drug testing for various purposes. You might need a drug test:

·         As a condition of your employment

·         To play as a college or professional athlete

·         As part of a legal investigation

·         To monitor your treatment with opioids

Someone might ask that you take a drug test if you show up to work or to a health care appointment showing signs of drug use. These include slurred speech, paranoia, panic, and dilated pupils. The team at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine can explain to you why drug testing is necessary in your case and which specific drugs they are testing you for.
