What are immigration exams?

An immigration exam is an important step in becoming a United States citizen after moving from another country. You also need an immigration exam if you’ve lived here for a while and are changing your immigration status to become a permanent resident.

When you get your immigration exam, it must be performed by a physician designated as a civil surgeon. You can get your immigration exam according to all guidelines and requirements at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine to show that you are healthy and have no communicable or otherwise inadmissible health conditions and that you’re up to date on all required vaccinations. The exam also screens for drug abuse, addiction, and mental health conditions that could result in dangerous behaviors toward yourself or others.

What should I bring to my immigration exam?

There are a few things you should bring to L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine to be sure you’re ready to complete your immigration exam. The team at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine will need:

·         Passport or government ID

·         Your vaccination records

·         Current list of your medications

·         Proof of treatment for syphilis or tuberculosis

·         Report of learning disabilities (if a family member has them)

·         Mental health history and prognosis

You should print and bring the most current version of Form I-693 to your appointment. The team at L.A. Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine uses the form to document your results and will tell you when to sign it. They complete the form and seal it with any relevant documents before giving it back to you to deliver to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. You must keep it sealed and avoid opening it yourself.

What should I expect during my immigration exam?

An immigration exam is very similar to a general physical exam. The team asks questions about your health history and reviews your documents. If you need any of the required vaccinations, the team provides them. You might need a second appointment depending on the specific vaccines you still need.

Your provider performs a thorough physical examination and a mental examination. During the physical exam, they check your:

·         Eyes

·         Ears

·         Nose and throat

·         Arms and legs

·         Heart

·         Lungs

·         Abdomen

·         Lymph nodes

·         Skin Genitalia

They may also take a blood test and you may require an X-ray for further testing. The mental exam tests your judgment, intelligence, mood, and behavior.
